Every first-timer overpacks clothes and underpacks the things that actually matter. Here's the list we give our own group travelers.
Documents (in your carry-on, always)
- Passport (6+ months validity) + printed visa/eVisa confirmation
- Hotel bookings and flight itineraries, printed — phone batteries die
- Vaccination records if required that season
- Emergency contacts: your group leader, hotel, and the US Embassy in Riyadh / Consulate in Jeddah
Ihram & prayer essentials
- Men: two ihram sets (you'll be glad for the spare), an ihram belt with pockets, and unscented soap — regular toiletries violate the state of ihram
- Women: comfortable, loose abayas/clothing you can pray and walk kilometres in; no face covering while in ihram
- Lightweight prayer mat, pocket dua book or app with offline access, digital tasbih if you use one
Footwear (this is the section that matters)
- Broken-in, comfortable sandals you can slip off quickly — you will walk 8–15km some days
- A drawstring shoe bag to carry them inside the Haram — the #1 lost item is footwear left at entrance racks
- Flip-flops for the hotel bathroom
Health kit
- All prescription meds in original packaging + a copy of prescriptions
- Blister plasters (buy the good ones), pain relievers, oral rehydration salts, throat lozenges — the "Haram cough" is real
- Unscented sunscreen and lip balm (ihram-safe), small first-aid basics
- An umbrella for shade — more useful than a hat at midday
The things every first-timer forgets
- A universal power adapter (Saudi uses UK-style Type G plugs) and a power bank
- Small backpack or waist bag that meets Haram size rules
- Empty duffel folded flat inside your suitcase — for Zamzam packs and gifts on the way back
- Snacks for the airport-to-hotel leg; your first meal timing is unpredictable
- Cash in small bills (SAR) — cards work in hotels, cash rules the small shops
