US passport holders have two legitimate paths to performing Umrah, and the right choice depends on how you're traveling. Here's the comparison without the agency spin.

Option 1 — The Saudi tourist eVisa

Since Saudi Arabia opened tourism, US citizens can apply online for a one-year, multiple-entry tourist eVisa (~$130 including insurance) — and tourist visa holders are explicitly permitted to perform Umrah (outside the Hajj season). Approval is typically fast. This is the flexible choice: you can book your own flights and hotels, stay up to 90 days per visit, combine Umrah with visiting family, and return within the year on the same visa.

Option 2 — The dedicated Umrah visa

The classic route, arranged through licensed channels, usually bundled inside a package. Hotel bookings for Umrah-visa travelers flow through the official Saudi systems via licensed operators — which is why this path almost always comes packaged with your hotels and transport. If you're buying an all-inclusive package anyway, this is the path your company will likely use, and the bundled pricing is often competitive.

The honest comparison

  • Booking your own trip (DIY): tourist eVisa, almost every time. Cheaper, faster, more flexible.
  • All-inclusive package: let the company handle the visa — it's included in the price, and they're responsible for getting it right.
  • Ramadan travel: either works, but book early regardless — the visa is never the bottleneck; hotel inventory is.
  • Hajj: neither. Hajj requires Hajj authorization through Nusuk — no tourist or Umrah visa permits Hajj. Anyone suggesting otherwise is risking your deportation and ban.

Practical notes

  • Passport must have 6+ months validity remaining.
  • Women no longer require a mahram for Umrah travel under current rules — a major change from years past.
  • Vaccination requirements change seasonally; check current requirements when you book.
